Does Instagram Notify When Someone Unfollows? (2026)
Short answer: no. What the other person can and cannot see, how people still find out, and what tools can legitimately track.
No. Instagram does not send a notification when someone unfollows you, and it doesn't tell the other person when you unfollow them. Removing a follower, blocking and muting are just as silent. The only visible trace is a follower count that goes down by one.
That silence is deliberate, and it has a few consequences worth knowing. Below: what Instagram does and doesn't notify you about, what the other person can still notice, how people find out anyway, and where tracking tools fit in, including what SpySecret can and cannot do.
What Instagram notifies you about, and what it doesn't
Instagram's notifications are built around activity that involves your own account. You hear about:
- New followers, and follow requests if your account is private
- Likes, comments and replies on your posts
- Mentions and tags in posts, stories and comments
- Direct messages and message requests
- Live videos from accounts you follow, depending on your settings
You don't hear about:
- Someone unfollowing you
- Someone removing you from their followers
- Someone blocking or restricting you
- Someone muting your posts or stories
- Someone excluding you from their stories
In short, Instagram reports gains and interactions, not losses or distance. No setting changes this.
What the other person can and cannot see
If you unfollow someone, they get no message and no badge. The change is visible only if they go looking:
- Their follower count drops by one. On a larger account, that disappears among the normal ups and downs.
- You no longer appear in their Followers list. If they search for your name there, they won't find you.
- If your Following list is visible to them, their name is missing from it.
- If their account is private, you lose access to their posts and stories. To see them again you'd have to send a new follow request, and that request does reach them.
What they can't tell from the app alone is when you left, or whether you unfollowed them or simply deactivated your account.
How people still find out
Because Instagram stays quiet, people who care about a particular account use workarounds:
- Watching the count. A drop in followers is the first hint, but it doesn't say who left.
- Searching one name. Open your own Followers list and search for the account. If it's missing, that person no longer follows you, or their account is deactivated.
- Comparing exports. Instagram lets you download your followers and following lists through Accounts Center. Two exports a few weeks apart, compared side by side, show everyone who left in between.
- Third-party apps. Many "unfollower" apps promise to do the comparison for you.
The first three are free and keep your account safe. The guide on how to find your unfollowers yourself walks through them step by step.
Be careful with unfollower apps
Many unfollower apps ask you to sign in with your Instagram username and password. That hands them full access to your account. Instagram can treat the automated activity that follows as suspicious, which may mean forced password resets or temporarily blocked actions, and Instagram's terms don't allow apps to collect other people's login details. Some apps also lock their results behind surveys, downloads or subscriptions that are hard to cancel.
A simple rule: never type your Instagram password anywhere except Instagram itself. A tool that only needs a username and works with public information never touches your account.
What SpySecret does, and what it doesn't
SpySecret is one of those username-only tools, so it's fair to be precise about its scope.
What it does: you enter the username of a public Instagram profile, and SpySecret saves that profile's following and follower lists. Later scans show which accounts the profile newly follows and who newly follows it, each dated by the scan that found the change. On the Pro plan, an unfollow check compares the saved following list with the current one and lists the accounts that profile no longer follows. You start that check yourself; it becomes useful from the second day of tracking and works for profiles that follow up to 1,500 accounts.
What it doesn't do: SpySecret doesn't show which accounts stopped following you, it sends no alerts, and it can't see private accounts. If you enter your own public username, you'll see new follows and new followers of your profile, but not a list of people who left.
To see how it works on another public profile, run a first scan with SpySecret. Plans and prices are shown in the app before you pay.
The short version
Instagram never announces an unfollow, in either direction. You can find out yourself with a name search or by comparing data exports, both free and safe. Apps that want your password are the risky option. And if your question is about another public profile, such as which accounts it stopped following, a username-only tracker can answer it from the day you start.
Frequently asked questions
Does Instagram tell someone when you unfollow them?
No. The other person gets no notification. They can only notice by watching their follower count or by searching their Followers list for your name.
Does Instagram notify you when someone removes you as a follower?
No. Removing a follower is silent too. You would only notice that you no longer appear in their Followers list or, if their account is private, that you can't see their posts anymore.
If I unfollow someone and follow them again, will they know?
Following again counts as a new follow, so the person can get a new-follower notification. If their account is private, they receive a new follow request.
Can I see which accounts stopped following me?
Not as a list in the Instagram app. You can search your Followers list for a specific name or compare two exports from Accounts Center. SpySecret doesn't offer this for your own account.
Are unfollower apps safe?
Apps that ask for your Instagram password are risky: they get full access to your account, and Instagram may restrict activity it considers automated. Tools that only need a public username don't touch your account, but check what they can really show before you pay.
Why did my follower count drop if nobody unfollowed me?
Counts also drop when followers deactivate or delete their accounts, or when Instagram removes spam and fake accounts. Those accounts disappear from your list without anyone unfollowing.
