Can You See Who Someone Recently Followed on Instagram?
Not directly. Instagram shows no follow dates on other people's profiles and doesn't promise that their following list is sorted by time, so the account at the top isn't necessarily the newest. What does work is comparing snapshots: save the list now, check it again later and see what was added. That covers public profiles only, and only the time after your first snapshot.

What Instagram itself shows
On your own profile, you get some control: as of October 2026, your Following list can be sorted by the date you followed each account, newest or oldest first. On someone else's profile there is no such option. You can open their Following list if the account is public or if you follow it, and you can search it for a name, but you won't see when any account was added.
Instagram also doesn't tell anyone when another account follows someone. Notifications only cover your own account: new followers, follow requests, mentions and similar.
It used to be different. A "Following" tab in the activity feed once showed what the accounts you follow were liking and following. Instagram confirmed in October 2019 that it was removing that tab, partly because many people didn't realize their activity was visible there. A lot of today's "recently followed" searches are people looking for that missing feature.
Why the order of someone else's following list is not a timeline
Plenty of tutorials claim the top of a following list shows the newest follows. Sometimes the order really does look chronological, which is why the advice survives. But Instagram doesn't document how other people's lists are ordered, users regularly report different orders on different phones or accounts, and the order can change between two visits. Treat a position in the list as a hint at best.
In September 2026, users on r/Instagram reported that well-known recent-follow tools had stopped working or showed random results. One tracker publisher said Instagram had stopped ordering following lists by time; another disputed this and said the sorting had been algorithmic for years. Instagram announced nothing. The evidence is mixed, so we describe both readings rather than pick one. Our guide to Instagram's following list order collects the reports in detail.
A position near the top also says nothing about how much two people interact. Lists can be ranked differently for different viewers, so don't read a relationship into where a name appears.
Ways people try to find recent follows
Searches for this question lead to five kinds of answers. They differ a lot in what they can actually tell you:
- Scrolling the following list. Free and instant, but the order isn't a reliable timeline, so you can't tell new from old.
- Searching for one specific account. Open the profile's Following list and type the name. You learn whether they follow that account now, not since when.
- Keeping your own snapshots. Screenshot or copy the list today and compare it in a week. Accurate for small accounts, slow and error-prone once a list has hundreds of entries.
- Scan-based tracking. A tool saves the list and repeats the comparison on a schedule. Same principle as your own snapshots, without the manual work.
- Sites that promise everything. If a site claims to show follows of private accounts or dates from before anyone was watching, or wants your Instagram password, close it.
How scan-based tracking works
A tracker such as the SpySecret following tracker automates the snapshot method. The first scan saves the public following and follower lists of a profile. Each later scan reads the lists again, compares them with the saved version and records the accounts that are new.
Every new follow gets a detection time: the time of the scan that found it. The real follow happened between that scan and the previous one, which is why the scan rhythm matters. On SpySecret's Basic plan each profile is scanned once a day, so the window is up to 24 hours. On Pro, the main Spy profile is scanned about every hour.
SpySecret doesn't treat a position in the list as a date. It checks which accounts are present compared with the snapshot. After a few weeks you have something Instagram doesn't show: a dated record of the accounts a public profile started following, and of the accounts that started following it. The method is described step by step on How SpySecret works.
Limits
Of the methods above, comparing snapshots is the most dependable, but it has clear boundaries:
- Public profiles only. A private account's lists are hidden, and no legitimate tool can read them.
- No look back. Tracking starts with the first scan. Follows from before that can't be dated.
- Detection time, not follow time. You learn the window, not the minute.
- First page per scan. Each SpySecret scan reads the first page of the list, in the order Instagram returns it, and that order isn't guaranteed to be chronological. For profiles that follow more accounts than fit on that page, a new follow further down may appear late or be missed, and an earlier follow can show up as new.
- Short-lived follows. If an account is followed and unfollowed again between two scans, no tracker sees it.
Before you start tracking
A public following list is visible to anyone, but there is still a person behind it. Use what you find with care, and never to pressure, harass or control someone. SpySecret's terms prohibit that kind of use.
Frequently asked questions
Does Instagram show when someone followed someone?
No. Instagram shows no follow dates on other people's profiles. Only your own following list can be sorted by the date you followed accounts.
Is the top of someone's following list their most recent follow?
Not reliably. The order of another person's list isn't documented as chronological and can differ between viewers and visits. Use it as a hint at most.
Can I see recent follows of a private account?
No. If an account is private and you don't follow it, its lists are hidden. Tracking tools can't read them either, whatever some sites claim.
How can I see someone's new followers?
The same way: someone else's follower list isn't sorted by date, so you compare snapshots. SpySecret tracks new followers of public profiles together with new follows. More in how to see someone's new followers on Instagram.
Does the person know if I look at their following list?
Instagram doesn't notify people when someone opens their profile or lists, and SpySecret doesn't notify them either. Watching a story is different: story viewers can be seen by the account owner.
